Last year Ottawa hosted its first “bevy” with the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies. It was the the first time the organization, which throws beer parties for women, held an event outside of Toronto. The local response to the inclusive craft beer party was fantastic and the one-off looks to have become a regular series. The next Ottawa event will be June 15 at Overflow Brewery.
“Yep, we’re throwing our bevies now twice a year in Ottawa!” says SOBDL co-founder Erica Campbell. “Ottawa has such a dynamic and exciting craft beer scene that it just made sense to bring the SOBDL to the 613. It’s clear women are drinking craft beer like never before, all over the province, and there is a need to have a space where they can be themselves.”
That the event has grown beyond the GTA speaks to both the success of the organization and their goal. That it has become a regular event here in Ottawa shows that there is a demand for these types of gatherings.
South Ottawa’s Overflow Brewery was an especially great fit for the event because of its size. The organizers expect a couple hundred craft-beer-lovers to attend the 12pm–7pm party. Beyond Overflow, there are few local breweries with the event space to accommodate those numbers. There will be a shuttle bus to the downtown to help revellers to home safely.
Campbell explains what attendees can look forward to from a food and beer perspective: “Five Overflow beers, plus seven more beers—we got some pretty unique stuff including limited brews from Collective Arts, Black Lab Brewing, Henderson, Flora Hall and more. We’ll also have craft cider and non-alcoholic options pouring.” The SOBDL makes the effort to bring all forms of female entrepreneurship into their gatherings. “We’re pumped for the food this event: we’re working with the super popular and adorable folks at Little Jo Berry’s.”
Aside from the impressive beer lineup, it’s the social atmosphere that sets this beer event apart. “Come by yourself or bring a squad,” invites Campbell, “The vibe is very laid back, welcoming and inclusive. No networking or structured itineraries—the goal is really to create community, enjoy craft beers, dance to our playlist, be yourself, and connect with other beer drinking loving ladies.”
