Season Preview 2019–2020: Orpheus Musical Theatre

By Samara Caplan and Laura Gauthier on February 28, 2019

Laura and Samara spend their days as non-profit unicorns and fill every spare minute exploring the world of musical theatre as BFFs (that’s Broadway Friends Forever).

There’s no better way to get Broadway nerds excited than by announcing a new season of shows to look forward to all year long. So we wanted to share the excitement and tell you why you should be pumped for Ottawa’s very own Orpheus Theatre’s new season! For more on how this show selection came to be, check out this interview with the staff at Orpheus.

First up in September 2019 is Falsettos. Both the original 1992 and revival in 2016 won Tony Awards. This quirky, humorous at times, and ultimately heartening tale of an unusual family dynamic covers everything from a bar mitzvah, gay relationships, divorce, HIV/AIDS, to marrying your psychiatrist—all with incredible songs that will surely get stuck in your head after seeing it. (Seriously we CANNOT STOP playing the entire revival soundtrack on repeat!)

Late fall brings the Tony Award-winning show Matilda The Musical to Meridian Centrepointe Theatres. The classic Roald Dahl children’s book about a five-year-old girl who helps her classmates rise up against a mean headmistress. With music and lyrics by comedian, actor, musician Tim Minchin, the show brings your favourite childhood book (and movie!) to life in a whole new, magical way on stage.

Spring 2020 sees a top-secret-yet-to-be-announced show slated—so stay tuned. (We are definitely on the edge of our seats in anticipation!)

The final show of the season, in late spring 2020, will be the musical comedy A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, which has won four Tony Awards including Best Musical. It tells the tale of a ninth-in-line heir who decides to eliminate the other eight heirs to the dukedom and well—comedy ensues…

If this thrilling season seems too far away—don’t despair! The wonderful talent at Orpheus Theatre still have two shows left this season. In March, Sister Act (based on the hit movie) will have you singing praises, and in May the quirky tale of a trio hitting the road in Australia is another movie-based musical, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It’ll have you humming along with all the familiar tunes.

To keep you going while you’re anticipating next year’s shows, check out this short playlist of songs from each show that we’ve chosen to give you a taste:
