Scary Bear Soundtrack is an all-girl rock band based right here in Ottawa. The group consists of the appropriately named Gloria Song (who should be familiar to you all as Apartment613’s music writer), Keyboardist/vocalist Dannik, guitarist Maggie and drummer Ainslie (who also serves the tea).

This group’s video for their single Asian Fetishist manages to be smart and silly at the same time, which is not a example of their general sound. The video, released as part of Asian Heritage Month, tackles some issues that many people in our multicultural country can relate to: interacting with people who keep trying to tag you as something other than Canadian.

“It’s sort of a response to an excellent Jezebel article I read online about hipster racism,” explains Gloria.  “It talks about how a lot of people think that it’s okay to make racist jokes because they assume it’s understood that they’re being ironic… And contrary to what some folks think, it’s actually not that flattering to have creepy guys hit on you because they have a big fetish for Asians.  Women generally like to be appreciated for their intelligence, personality, and beauty, and not solely on the basis of their skin colour.”

Asian Fetishist was recorded in Gloria’s bedroom while she was working on human rights issues in Windhoek, Namibia.  “Race issues were especially prevalent in post-apartheid Namibia,” Gloria notes, “and so I spent a lot of time thinking about identity, both as a Canadian and a woman of Korean descent.”

Scary Bear Soundtrack will be performing “Asian Fetishist” and other original songs on Saturday, May 19 at Falldown Gallery (288 Bank Street) when they open for Wool and Howl.  Tickets are $5, and doors open at 9PM.
