Apartment613’s first artist-in-residence has completed their special project for the blog. In fact, Kathleen Atkinson-Hindle delivered the finished work in July… We took a while documenting every piece and setting up Apt613’s online shop for a sale. Our Shopify store was inactive for quite some time—who here remembers the 2011 t-shirt contest? (If you still have one, we want to see it! DM @apt613.)
The complete Together Apart necklace collection will go on sale next Thursday, August 13. Each piece is a single edition made from one piece of solid sterling silver, which together form a whole map of Ottawa. If you would like to be notified when this sale begins, email <community@apt613.ca> and we’ll shoot you a reminder.
With input from Apt613 readers, Kathleen decided to cut the sheet into 23 pieces, based on the City of Ottawa’s current ward boundaries. As you can see, some of the outer areas like West Carleton-March and Rideau-Goulbourn are big bling! Statement pieces, for sure.
Each piece is hand-crafted by the artist and attached to an 18-inch sterling silver chain, which falls approximately mid chest. Pictured below for reference is Ward 10, Gloucester-Southgate.
Kathleen’s wish is for each pendant to be a special piece that belongs to somebody living in that part of town, or someone with a special connection to the neighbourhood, bringing all of these strangers together by holding a piece of the whole artwork, “together apart.” So if a necklace is not your vibe, consider getting one as a thank you gift for someone in your area that deserves recognition.
“One of the things I appreciate most about being a metalsmith is that the work I create will last for generations—metal will last much longer than I will,” says Kathleen Atkinson-Hindle. “The idea that these necklaces can serve to commemorate the beautiful acts that are happening everyday on a small scale in our neighbourhoods as we navigate our way through this tragedy delights me.”
The artist will receive 100 per cent of revenue from the sale of Together Apart necklaces. Further, we’re happy to share that Kathleen has pledged to donate 50 per cent of profit to the Ottawa Community Foundation. (Way to go, Kathleen! That’s up to $500 if this one-of-a-kind collection sells out.) On August 13th, necklaces will go on sale for $61.30 each (see what we did there?!) until every piece finds a home.
Kathleen Atkinson-Hindle was the first Ottawa artist to receive Apartment613’s Residency Grant. You can visit apt613.ca/residency to learn more about this program. Also head to baskk.ca for more of Kathleen’s original work.
The summer 2020 residency was funded by Apt613’s volunteer Board of Directors. If you represent a business or cultural organization; or as an individual would like to contribute to Apt613’s Residency Fund, please reach out to <board@apt613.ca>.
