Orpheus Musical Theatre is back and it’s time to seize the day! They’re opening their season with Newsies on November 18, based on the 1992 film and inspired by the real-life newsies’ strike of 1899.

The show follows the story of a group of young newspaper sellers as Jack Kelly leads them into a strike after the newspapers raise the cost of papers at the sellers’ expense. Jack rallies the other sellers to stand up for better working conditions and to be treated with equity. Filled with high-energy dancing and big theatre numbers, we don’t doubt you’ll be tapping your toes from beginning to end.

With well-known Broadway belters including Seize the Day, King of New York, and Santa Fe, you’re bound to leave the show with a new favourite musical jam.

Even though the show takes place 100 years ago, the themes are still relevant—worker solidarity, equality and equity, and seizing the moment. (Hmm, especially of late!) Done with humour and a fantastic Tony award-winning score by the legendary composer Alan Menken, you’ll be drawn into the story, songs, and energetic dance numbers and be inspired to ignite change.

We are so excited about what this new season has in store, and what better way to kick it off than with this excellent show? After a long intermission, we know the Orpheus team will knock it out of the park, as they always do, and that this will have been more than worth the wait! Be sure to grab your tickets and support the local theatre setting the bar in Ottawa.

Newsies runs from November 18 to 27 at Meridian Centrepointe Theatre. Tickets are from $32 to $57 and the show is suitable for all ages.
