Preview: Alegría by Cirque du Soleil—08.01.19 to 09.01.19

By Philippe Ha on July 24, 2019

Back by popular demand, one of Cirque du Soleil’s most iconic productions comes to the Zibi site, in Gatineau, August 1 to September 1. Celebrating 25 years since its original debut, Alegría not only helped define the company’s signature style, it also paved the way for its worldwide expansion. Today, Alegría has been presented in more than 250 cities worldwide to over 14 million spectators.

As classics often do, the show explores themes that remain relevant despite the passage of time—the quest for power, the thirst for change, and the triumph of light over darkness. Ahead of the Gatineau premiere, Apartment 613 spoke with tour publicist, Francis Jalbert, about Alegría’s triumphant return to the big top.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

This being the show’s 25th anniversary, what should spectators expect from the reboot?

Jalbert: It’s the first time at Cirque du Soleil that we bring back a show to the Big Top. We decided that instead of doing an intact restaging of the 1994 production, we should look at Alegría through today’s creative lens ensuring that the production remains as inspiring as it was 25 years ago.

All components of Alegría from costumes, make-up designs, stage design or acrobatic performance have been looked at and reinvented to reflect what Cirque du Soleil has become in 2019 and leave the same emotional impact on the audience.

We put together a creative team of creators who had worked on the original production and newcomers, taking a new spin on the themes and stage direction of the original production, its fanciful characters, its memorable melodies and its acrobatics. The story line was actualized; instead of exploring of a conflict of generations, we are evoking a conflict of ideas between aristocratic visions and the desire to change the world. The intentions between the different characters have been reworked to fit with the new storyline of the show. The musical arrangements have been renewed, including winks to today’s popular genres for audiences to rediscover the iconic melodies composed by René Dupéré.

What do you love about this show? Anything the audience should keep an eye out for?

Jalbert: Alegría has helped define the unique style of Cirque du Soleil, so the show encompasses everything people love and expect from a Cirque du Soleil show: jaw-dropping acrobatics in a whimsical visual universe that makes your forget about your reality and dream for 2.5 hours.

Instead of telling people what to think, the themes and storyline are evocative so each individual can have their own interpretation of what they see. Alegría brings back the child in people who leave the Big Top completely in awe at the whole experience.

For some, this may be the first time experiencing Cirque du Soleil. What advice can you give them?

Jalbert: There is no specific advice, our shows appeal to everyone whichever cultural background they have or how old they are. Come in expecting the unexpected and knowing you will see 53 artists from 16 different nationalities pushing the limits of what you thought wasn’t physically possible.

As soon as you step under the Big Top, you will be transported to an imaginary universe that will surprise and touch you with its powerful live score, its fanciful costumes and its out-of-this-world set design. It’s circus meets theatre in the most impactful way.
