Poetry meets pop culture at A Dramatic Reading of Pop Songs

By Krista Dawn Shackleford on April 14, 2014

Just in time for National Poetry Month, Ottawa VERSeFest and IdeaSpace invite you to come celebrate the sillier side of this art form. Dramatic pop song readings have a long history (think Peter Seller’s cover of A Hard Day’s Night, or William Shatner’s utterly bizarre rendition of Rocket Man). On April 17th, Ottawa’s top poetic talent will be on hand at IdeaSpace to carry on the tradition. If you’re curious about Ottawa’s poetry scene, this fundraiser will be a fun and approachable way to get your feet wet.

Hosted by CBC’s Evan Solomon and Amanda Putz, A Dramatic Reading of Pop Songs brings Ottawa’s poetic talent together with the pop songs you love, hate, or love to hate. (A promotional poster alludes to the possibility of Evan Solomon performing Avril Lavigne’s Sk8er Boi – something I think would be worth the $10 price of admission alone!) People often distinguish between “high” and “low” culture, but the line between these two extremes is usually blurred. The performances you see may or may not change your opinion about Justin Bieber’s lyrical talents, but they will certainly deepen your appreciation for our poets.

A Dramatic Reading of Pop Songs will be held at IdeaSpace, a collaborative venue open to meetings, social events, galas, and other happenings. IdeaSpace excels at facilitating artistic event ideas and bringing them to life. One of their sponsors is Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company – meaning that Beau’s will be on tap throughout the evening. Which is probably good, because let’s face it – some pop song lyrics need all the help they can get.

In addition to supporting IdeaSpace, this fundraiser supports Ottawa VERSeFest – a burgeoning site of poetic creativity in our city. VERSe Ottawa is a collectivity helping local poets meet, collaborate, and inspire each other’s work. Reading events facilitated by VERSe Ottawa reach between 600 and 1000 poetry enthusiasts each month, and feature a diverse array of written and spoken poetry traditions. In addition to these regular events, VERSe Ottawa organizes VERSeFest, an annual poetry festival attracting local and international talent. Attending A Dramatic Reading of Pop Songs will expose you to some of Ottawa’s top poetic talent, and whet your appetite for the next VERSeFest in 2015.

A Dramatic Reading of Pop Songs will take place at 7:30 PM on April 17th, 2014. IdeaSpace is located at 131 Bank Street. Tickets are available for $10 through Eventbrite.
