Podcast: New Fury FC captain Carl “Mr. Fury” Haworth

By Josh Lemoine on March 9, 2018

This week on the show, we’re chatting with Carl Haworth, longtime member of Ottawa Fury FC, who was recently named team captain for the upcoming USL season. Ottawa Fury FC begins their 2018 season on the road vs. Charlotte Independence on March 17, 2018.

England-born Haworth has played internationally for Canada, and has been with Fury FC since before the team even went professional.

“It’s a great feeling for sure,” says Haworth, on being named team captain. “Especially being at the club that gave me my first professional contract. I’ve been here for five-plus years now. I fell in love with the city, I’ve been adopted by the fans and the organization. To be able to get to lead this team and hopefully bring success back to the organization, it’s a great honour and I’m excited about the upcoming season.”

There’s currently a renewed sense of optimism around the club. Former team captain, assistant coach, and interim head coach Julian de Guzman was named GM in the offseason. While De Guzman has brought in plenty of fresh talent (and a few familiar faces), possibly his biggest move was naming Nikola Popovic as head coach. Haworth says the difference is already noticeable with the new coach.

“It’s been a breathe of fresh air. Guys come in every day eager to train, eager to learn, and that’s all credit to Nikola. The respect that he’s created, the identity that he’s brought back to the team, we’re all on board and we’re just raring to get this season going.”
