For one night only, Ottawa will be treated to a rare and special evening of entertainment when the Autumn Melody Collective transports the guests of the Arts Court Theatre to the far away and ancient land of China.
The multi-talented William Lau will use his extraordinary costume and make-up skills to transform himself, Wei Meng, and Laura Astwood in the performance of two Peking Opera repertoires.
Performed in both English and Chinese, the first opera is a traditional love story between a young woman and man. The second is a piece based on the famous Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Adding to the drama of the two stories will be the added surprise of the lead dancers switching gender roles, with William playing the female lead and Wei the male lead.
Helping to make the evening magical will be performances by Toronto’s Little Pear Garden Dance Company, the AiYue Choir and musician Patty Chan. Guests will be further immersed in the Chinese culture by a small exhibition of works by Ottawa artist Don Kwan. There will be a brief intermission between performances and at the end of the evening guests can join the artists for questions and selfies!!
It promises to be an enchanting evening of romance, laughter, and culture that everyone can enjoy.
