“We Were Birds (Instrumental)” by Zhilna // Here’s a debut for indie electronic duo, Zhilna (ظلنا). The piano-driven instrumental track is recommended if you like trip hop and lo-fi instrumental hip hop beats, however a statement from the band says subsequent releases will include lyrics in English, French, and Arabic. Zhilna is a brand new project by Ottawa-based musicians whose identities we’ve yet to determine: @zhilna_music is a new IG account with very few followers. Apt613 has yet to locate a Bandcamp store or project website for Zhilna. If you find one, please drop it in the comments below! [Instagram]
“Bill Murray” by Double Experience // The 2x nominated Capital Music Awards heavy rock act Double Experience just released “Bill Murray”, which is a noticeably mellow departure from their usual fare blasting on alt-rock radio. Their nerdcore D&D concept album Alignments was up for Album of the Year at the Capital Music Awards, and the band’s special initiative—like raising $4,000 for a local dog rescue charity on their Twitch channel—earned them the nomination for Group of the Year. “Traveller” by Mad Gamma // Ottawa folk rock trio Mad Gamma (Sam Fisher, Matt Atchison, Emma Bulchak-Healy) are releasing a new EP project one song at a time. “Traveller” is the band’s third single uploaded to Spotify since “Whirlpool” was featured in our #ottmusic weekly playlist three months ago. It’s an emotional rock ballad (big drums!) featuring the band’s signature three-part harmonies, electric guitar and keys. Fisher, who also has a background in visual art, has been creating the original cover art for each song. [Website]
“Devil’s Rising” by Jessica Pearson & The East Wind // The Ottawa folk project led by Jessica Pearson and Maddie O’Regan has released four new singles since signing to Willow Sound Records, and we hope they’re working toward a full-length album this year! For a band which has played hundreds of shows together and toured internationally, it may surprise you that that would be their debut full-length record after all these years. The project launched with an EP in 2017 and continues to grow on the strength of their live shows and storytelling. [Bandcamp]
