“That’s Haram” by Karter Zaher // Ottawa’s Karter Zaher (aka Kodor Zaher) was part of the well-known Muslim duo Deen Squad that gained international attention from BBC Radio and The Fader for their “Halal remixes” of mainstream artists like Drake and Camila Cabello, amassing more than 200 million YouTube views. Zaher has opened for Justin Bieber in Dubai and is now premiering his solo work to relaunch his music career since parting ways with Deen Squad in 2019. [Bandcamp]

“World’s a Bitch” by Church of Trees feat. Carol Pope // Ottawa synthpop band Church of Trees collaborated with new-wave icon Carole Pope on this new single from the project’s forthcoming Pause EP. The story goes that Pope and Church of Trees were working separately with the same producer, Rob Preuss, who felt they’d make a great match. After recording a demo with Jordon Zadorozny of Pembroke’s Skylark Park studio, Church of Trees sent it out to Preuss in New York City, who pitched the song to Pope. “I couldn’t believe she liked it,” says Church of Trees songwriter Brendan Frazer.
