“Don’t Be Scared” by Asuquomo // Nigerian-born, Ottawa-based hip hop artist Asuquomo dropped a new video for his 2020 track, “Don’t Be Scared,” which isn’t on his breakthrough DIOBU LP, but comes from the OT Riddim mixtape he put out lowkey in February. Directed by Asuquomo and Justjay, the dark, trippy, avant-garde visuals are shot out in the frozen suburbs of Ottawa and at Cinqhole (R.I.P.) in Hintonburg.
“Spark” by Gianna Lauren // The indie art rock songwriter announced a new EP, Vanity Metrics, out November 6. Though based in Halifax, Gianna Lauren has family in Ottawa and a connection to the #ottmusic scene through the album’s backing band (one that features members of Ottawa’s Pony Girl). This track centres around Lauren’s lyrics on social justice and struggling with feelings of helplessness about making real change. The performance gradually intensifies throughout the song, amplifying the subject matter, but the choruses introduce an offer of hope and reconciliation as Lauren sings: “before I die, I will tell you, I love you.”
