“afterthought” by summersets // This track comes with a new music video! The duo of Kalle Mattson and Andrew Sowka is sharing their first new music of 2021. “afterthought” is “another new chapter for us as a band, but also for the two fictional characters we chronicled in our debut EP, small town saturday,” says Mattson. “Each verse flips perspective from each character as their relationship seemingly comes to an end, a car crashes, and they both run through their regrets.” Like their past work as summersets, “afterthought” was once again produced by long time collaborator Jim Bryson. “Daylight Flying (Edit)” by You Everyone Someone // Already an established songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in the Canadian bluegrass and country scene, Joseph McDonald is burning down the barn with his new electronic music. “Daylight Flying (Edit)” is a tight and breezy edit of his song first released on Ottawa’s Music.Art.Ppl label. “Lève tes voiles” by Marie-Clo // Proud of her francophone roots, bilingual pop singer Marie-Clo says it was impossible for her to release an anglophone album such as Shell(e) without working in at least one French single. On Pt. 3 of her concept album, which was released as EPs over the course of a year, “Lève tes voiles” is Marie-Clo’s franco hit. She’s joined in the studio by members of the Ottawa bands Pony Girl and FET.NAT. Watch the music video for a dance duet featuring Marie-Clo herself. [Bandcamp]
“Sleep” by Drae // It’s actually hard to say if award-winning duo Drae (aka André Thibault and Matt Robillard) is a hip hop group with hard-rock vibes, or a heavy rock band with hip hop cred. Definitely recommended if you like Rage Against the Machine. The new single “Sleep” arrives ahead of Drae’s forthcoming album, TARDIGRADE. “We wanted the song to feel like a rock song,” Robillard says. “We tried to stay away from samples as much as possible so the music feels organic, more energetic, and has a very human element to it.” Watch the new music video directed by Andrew Lessard. “Roses” by Jenna Nation // “Roses” is a heartfelt song by Ottawa-based r&b singer Jenna Nation, whose career thus far has involved collabs with Grammy winner Boi-1da, opening for Shawn Mendes and Chromeo, and an album named one of the 10 best records of the year by the U.S. alt-weekly Village Voice Magazine. This new tune appeared on Spotify just before Valentine’s Day… Probably not a coincidence, given the song seems to be about two people who are slowly realizing their feelings for one another.
