Ottawa Creatives: Emmett Morrison

By Amanda Armstrong on April 8, 2015

Emmett Morrison’s love of records was passed on to him at a very young age by his parents. They both shared a love of music and there was always something spinning on the record player. His parents would take him on weekly trips to the record store to add to their impressive collection and, naturally, it followed that Emmett began collecting records himself.

As Emmett became older, his love of records grew, and just over 11 years ago he started DJing. His DJing career began when a few friends, who were young mods, needed a place to dance to 60s soul, Motown, R & B and garage rock. Emmett had a friend who worked at a club and he decided to approach them about throwing a mod-themed dance party.

The club agreed and, despite how nervous Emmett was they might not, people showed up and had a good time. Now in its twelfth year, DJ Gaz & Emmett’s Mod Club Ottawa at Babylon has become Ottawa’s longest running weekly mod-themed dance party.

When Emmett is DJing, it is all about shaking hips and smiling lips. Emmett still uses vinyl from his parents’ collection and records that they bought for him, along with the rest of his collection that he has amassed over the years. “There are so many great songs” says Emmett, “the trick is finding a few soul tunes we all can agree on and having the best night possible together”.

In addition to DJing Mod Club Ottawa every Sunday night at Babylon, Emmett also DJs every Saturday night at Maxwell’s on Elgin. In other exciting news: Emmett is working with some of his favourite Ottawa DJs, such as Calkuta, Jas Nasty, and Sweetcheeks, to bring us some great dance parties later on this year!
