Ottawa Arts Council reveals 2020 Arts Awards winners

The Ottawa Arts Council announced its annual Arts Awards winners this week via social media, rather than at its usual ceremony, which has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The OAC gives out seven awards each year, some focused on different stages in an artist’s career and others on specific projects. This year saw a “thorough review” of the awards program to ensure that the existing model was serving the community well, said OAC’s Executive Director Nicole Milne. An explicit effort was made to ensure more diverse juries (which are composed of local arts leaders), and more opportunities have been added to showcase the work of award winners.

The 2020 Arts Awards recipients are as follows:

  • Victor Tolgesy Award: Pier Rodier, Artistic Director
  • Peter Honeywell Mid-Career Award: Rebecca Noelle, singer-songwriter
  • RBC Emerging Artist Award: Asuquomo (aka Morris Ogbowu), musician
  • Project X Photography Award: John Healey, photographer
  • Corel Endowment for the Arts Award: Cheryl Pagurek, visual artist
  • Young Artist Award: Kezia Djungu-Sungu, filmmaker
  • Business and the Arts Award: Dominion City Brewery
