The Ottawa Art Gallery’s Art & Parcel offers great (and affordable) local art

By Amanda Armstrong on December 2, 2016

Inside the walls of the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG), is a gallery within the gallery. The OAG’s ART Rental & Sales allows people and businesses to rent or purchase works of art by local artists, turning bare walls into galleries of their own.

We had the opportunity to check out the opening party of the Ottawa Art Gallery’s annual holiday sale, Art & Parcel, this Tuesday eve. Countless prints, paintings, and photographs adorned the walls, and windowsills, of ART Rental & Sales, all of which are available for purchase.

The party was part art sale and part night out on the town. There was great music by DJ Sarrita, Arlington Five poured a delicious cider, and it was difficult to restrain oneself with all the incredible hors d’oeuvres from the Heirloom Kitchen. If you haven’t heard of The Heirloom Kitchen, they provide a canning service within the city. You give them your fruits and veggies and they return to you delicious jams, jellies, and preserves.

The holiday sale features hundreds of pieces, by a wide range of artists, whose work takes on different forms, from prints and paintings, to ceramics and jewelry. The sweetest little plant holders from Hollow Clayworks, beautiful pieces of jewellry by Lisa Wilson, and a colouring book featuring scenes of our city by several local artists, called Ottawa in Colour.

If you didn’t make the vernissage, you missed out on some tasty treats and a super fun time, but there is still plenty of opportunity to get yourself some great work by local artists. With items for purchase anywhere from 10$ to 400$, there are many pieces available at a wide range of price points.

While you are there, make certain that you visit the current exhibitions on display at the Ottawa Art Gallery. One such exhibit, Melanie Authier’s Contrarieties & Counterpoints is a collection of stunning modernist acrylic paintings, with creatures who appear to be cleverly hidden amongst the brushstrokes. Her large scale works in various shades of grey on canvas are especially beautiful.

Art & Parcel runs until the end of the month and pieces are available to purchase any time the Gallery is open.
