Neighbourhood Wars: The Final 8

By Katie Marsh on April 16, 2012

The story to date: Apartment613 launched the 2012 Neighbourhood Wars a few weeks ago, our yearly contest to determine which Ottawa hood is best. The preliminary round saw Ottawa neighbourhoods divided into four conferences – East, West, Centre and Boonies. The top two neighbourhoods in each conference were to advance to the finals.

In the West, returning champion Hintonburg/ Mechanicsville smashed the nearest competitor by 100 votes. The contest for second place was much closer, with Chinatown beating out Westboro by only two votes!

No one will be surprised that the juggernaut that is Centretown kicked ass in its conference, also beating out its closest competitors by a large margin. Perhaps more surprising is the Glebe beating out the Market for a second year in a row. Unfortunately, a strong write-in campaign for the Golden Triangle wasn’t enough to take it to the final.

In the East, New Edinburgh/ Beechwood handily took first place, again by a very large margin. Student Mecca Sandy Hill took second, way ahead of Vanier, Old Ottawa East and Rockcliffe Park.

Last, the Boonies conference (which is our catch all category for both suburbs and places not technically located within city limits but still part of Ottawa in our hearts) saw Gatineau come out in first place. Almonte took second, despite a strong write in campaign for Wakefield.

Now, the Final 8 have been selected and will face off starting in early May. This is where you come in. We’re looking for eight champions who will use a combination of puns, humour and even yo mama jokes (do neighbourhoods have mothers) in order to prove your hood is the chosen one. If you think you’ve got the necessary gusto, send us an email at apartment613 at gmail dot com with Hood Wars in the title, the hood you’d like to cover and why you think you’re the right person to represent your neighbourhood.

Also, keep an eye out for our neighbourhood pins, which will be available soon.
