NBOG promises night of interactive art from dusk ’til dawn

By Amanda Armstrong on September 15, 2015

This Saturday night our city will spend a sleepless night celebrating the vibrant arts and culture scene that makes our community such a wonderful place to be. The fourth annual Nuit Blanche, Hype Frénésie, will take place across Ottawa’s downtown core and spread into Gatineau from 7:19pm to 4:20am.

Nuit Blanche Ottawa+Gatineau began in 2012 as one of a handful of such events across Ontario drawing crowds of over 30 000 people that year. The following year, Nuit Blanche Ottawa+Gatineau became an Independent Not-For-Profit Foundation and has continued to grow in size ever since. This year will feature over 70 different projects scattered across the Byward Market, Arts Court, the Glebe, Hintonburg, Centretown, and Gatineau.

Here are some event highlights to help you map out your night:

Techno Sauna // SAW Gallery:  Techno Sauna will feature videos and performances from Ottawa and Montreal DJs which you can enjoy from the comfort of a sauna, or hot and cold baths. For those feeling adventurous, the clothing becomes optional after the kiddos have gone to bed.

Ottawa Dance Directive – Hype Er Active // Arts Court: Contemporary dancers from Ottawa, Montreal, and Kingston will be putting on a series of live dance performances, contrasting big energy with small spaces.

Douglas Adam – SPLAT! // George Street:  Come launch one of three thousand paint-filled balloons at a giant blank canvas and be part of a collective art piece of extraordinary size.

Human Library – AOE Arts Council // Byward Zone: Chat one-on-one with local artists, as a part of AOE’s Human Library;

Canada Science and Technology Museum // Byward Zone: Create your own constellation, discover stories behind starry patterns and take a crazy “self-heat” picture with a thermal camera.

Carson and Stewart – CAMERA HYPESCURA // Byward Zone Have your picture taken in this human powered photo booth. Your photo, taken in black and white, is your to keep.

Clarendon Court will be alight with the glow of countless wireless LED lights for participants to create whatever their hearts desire. There will also be large scale projections of amusement park rides, to get our hearts pumping and creative juices flowing.

Take part in the Comic Jam, happening at the Ottawa School of Art. Participants will help create improvised comic strip stories in group format. There will be an interactive celebration of the urban arts taking place out front, with live grafitti artists and break dancing. Participants are invited to pick up the spray can and join the artists in the creation of a collective mural. Monster Printmaking will also be back this year, creating monster-sized prints with the use of a steamroller.

In Gatineau, Axené07 will feature a village of transparent tipis, which communicate with one another through light. Fau Mardi will be taking over Laval Street with a giant VJ/DJ dance party.

There will also be live music performances happening throughout the Glebe, in conjunction with Marvest at CityFolk.

If that (small sample) were not enough, there are also events taking place on the outskirts. If you have a chance, swing by Orange Art Gallery, PDA Projects, or the Ottawa Burlesque Festival at the Bronson Centre. They are all a part of the fun as well!

For those of you wondering how to make sure you see all that Nuit Blanche has to offer, between the hours of dusk and dawn: there’s a free shuttle service between sights leaving every 30-45 minutes.

It will be hard to get a good night’s rest the night before, with Kitchen Party’s fourth birthday celebration happening at Nostalgica, so be sure to sleep in late before strolling down to Chinatown Remixed in the afternoon. Grab some grub, then get back out there and keep the good times going at Nuit Blanche’s night-long affair.

Nuit Blanche Ottawa + Gatineau is happening on September 19, 2015, from dust until dawn. For a full listing of events, check their website.
