Three-piece Montreal rock band, Das Blankout, stops in Ottawa this Wednesday as part of their Quebec-Ontario Invasion tour. In anticipation of their show, Apt613 spoke with Matt Burghardt, lead singer and guitarist, about their recent album release, Everything Diamonds.

Much to the effect of what its name reflects, Burghardt shares the inspiration behind their debut recording. “The songs were about our perspective on life. We look at life the same way we would look at diamonds.” For me, that’s as perfect, polished products, often unappreciative of the fascinating parts that make up the process.

The band, formed of Burghardt, sister Kim Burghardt (base & backups) and Pat Bilodeau (drummer), timely came together after the erosion of Point Blankout, Matt’s previous musical endeavour. After randomly meeting Pat at a weekend jam session and reconnecting with his sister Kim, “something inside all of us” was sparked and their desire to self-produce a full length album, more than just an EP, made headway at full-throttle.

The road to production however, didn’t come without its set of yellow lights. Matt reveals, “We recorded half of the tracks in a professional studio, the other half in our studio. We mixed it and then we were forced to redo everything after it came back from mastering.” Nonetheless, Matt reflects positively on the experience sharing that, “We learned so much. We made our own mistakes, were a bit naïve, but we wouldn’t be the same band we are today if we didn’t.”

Dynamic, multi-faceted and a rare gem among rock bands, Das Blankout released Everything Diamonds at Divan Orange (Montreal) on October 28, 2014, performing their last Quebec hometown show.

Expect to hear most songs off the debut album (plus a few new tunes if you’re lucky) merged into one constant modern rock track. In the meantime, you can download their latest single from their website.
