Apt613 last spoke to Michael Feuerstack upon the release of Tambourine Death Bed back in May. Since then he’s returned to Ottawa a few times to play the second edition of the Arboretum Festival as well as lead a workshop at the Ottawa Folk Festival. Feuerstack has returned to the capital region once more, and this time he’s taking Halifax’s Paper Beat Scissors and our own Her Harbour across the river for an intimate show at Le Temporaire in Gatineau.
This is the beginning of a tour for Feuerstack and Tim Crabtree – the man behind Paper Beat Scissors – that will take them across Ontario. Both artists are on the same label, Forward Music Group. The small size of the label allows for a lot of collaboration and has yielded some creative synergies with Feuerstack producing Crabtree’s last record.
Although Feuerstack and Crabtree’s music isn’t cut from the same cloth, there are similarities in their guitar-rich, lyrically poignant songs. Feuerstack found the collaboration a rewarding experience. “It was great for me as it really boosted my confidence about producing outside of my own records or bands.” He’s now working on production for Bent by Elephants from Montreal and hopes to do more producing in the future.
The idea of the show at Le Temporaire is to keep it focused on the songwriter and keep it intimate, giving the artists room to experiment. “For me, I like to reinterpret the song every time I play. Not having the instruments from the recording isn’t a problem.” However, despite the show’s focus on solo artists Feuerstack assures me that he and Crabtree will play together on a few songs. Here’s hoping Her Harbour will get in on the action too.
For those not familiar with the venue, Le Temporaire is an interesting artist-run space in downtown Hull. Feuerstack was there in June as a member of The Luyas, a memorable show that attracted none other than David Byrne. The Luyas had so much fun he decided to book the space for this gig.
Michael Feuerstack, Paper Beat Scissors and Her Harbour play Le Temporaire, 75 rue St-Rédempteur in Gatineau on Wednesday, September 18th. Doors at 8pm. $8.
