Somewhat buried in the news of Ottawa’s Capital Music Awards (our bad if Apt613 got carried away!) was a major announcement by MEGAPHONO. The music showcase festival and conference is returning from hiatus to produce a sixth edition from May 25–26, 2021. While MEGAPHONO usually takes place at clubs and pop-up venues around Ottawa-Gatineau, this entire event will be free and online.
Highlights of the program include Ottawa’s Lonely Boy, Lia Kloud, Akeem Oh, Aspects, fanclubwallet, Bucko Art Machine, and Orchidae. Although organizers are promoting Edmonton-born, Toronto-based rapper Cadence Weapon, Toronto singer-songwriter Dorothea Paas, and Toronto synth artist and rapper Sydanie as the top-billed headliners.
MEGAPHONO launched in 2015 with the goal of adding to the Ottawa-Gatineau music industry by curating live music showcases, inviting industry to the capital, and attempting to facilitate new business opportunities for Ottawa artists outside of their hometown. The most recent edition took place in 2019 before organizers announced a hiatus, opting instead to produce showcase events for Toronto artists in Los Angeles, and mention of a spring 2020 event in New York City which was presumably cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The complete program of panel discussions and other conference events has yet to be announced. In a press release, organizers say a diverse group of record labels, booking agents, publishers, music supervisors, festival directors, and other industry visitors will attend MEGAPHONO virtually.
