Marvest: Reaping a fine harvest from Jonathan Becker & The North Fields

By Apartment613 on September 18, 2015

Marvest is an offshoot of the CityFolk festival that runs between September 16th and 20th, at the Aberdeen Pavilion, and along Bank Street. These mostly free shows feature local artists, and we’ll be profiling some of those artists.

Jonathan Becker and the North Fields are excited for the inaugural edition of Cityfolk’s Marvest, describing it as “something new and unique” in Ottawa. Marvest was conceived as as a “musical harvest” aimed at exposing Ottawa to local music from within 100 miles of the region. This concept seems to be one near to the heart of Jonathan Becker, who wrote on his profile with CBC music that “i have lived here for over a decade and am quite fond of what tends to be an overlooked city – likely because of its parliament, federal workers, and quaint neighborhoods. as a city it hosts some beautiful greenspace, history, and rich multiculturalism.”

With 10 years of experience as a singer-songwriter behind him, Becker originally assembled the North Fields as collaborators on a few demos. Fellow performer Laura Sinclair was added on piano and Luke Person, a friend of Becker’s, on guitar. The band would eventually release Old Towns, their first self-released EP in 2012, recorded off the floor at The Depot in Lowertown.

Becker’s history in the DIY and punk scene has pushed the band towards a rock’n’roll-inspired project with roots, folk and alt-country influences. You can expect a balance of upbeat songs with down tempo breaks. In Jonathan’s own words, the band tries to “balance rock and roll and feelings”.  Ottawa Showbox described the band as “very much a “what you see is what you get” band, a group of peers making music that matters and that resonates with audiences”.  You’ll have a chance to experience that this weekend, at their free Marvest show.

Jonathan Becker and the North Fields are playing September 19, 2015 from 10pm to 10:45pm, at the Original Burger Joint.  You can also find the band on Facebook, Twitter, and Bandcamp.
