Marvest is an offshoot of the CityFolk festival that runs between September 16th and 20th, at the Aberdeen Pavilion, and along Bank Street. These mostly free shows feature local bands, and we’ll be profiling some of those bands. Guest post by Rose Ekins from Jackpine.

On Saturday, September 19th The Unrefined Olive is hosting a free Cityfolk Marvest Showcase presented by Jackpine. The Unrefined Olive, located in the Glebe, is Ottawa’s premier destination for specialty olive oils and preserves. Featured will be three local bands: Baberaham Lincoln, Steamers and Zoo Legacy. In keeping with the spirit of the venue, owner Elizabeth Kilvert has matched each band with one of her store’s various oils.

Baberaham Lincoln, hailing from Ottawa by way of Toronto, is comprised of long-time gal pals and their notorious sidekick wax nostalgic slacker pop. For this band, Kilvert chose Green Baklouti Chili Oil from Tunisia as it is as unique (the only example of this fruit oil in world) as the band within the Ottawa scene. Not only is it a rare oil, but its ingredients appear deceptively simple – only two ingredients are used. However, the oil can be used in hundreds of applications. While Baberaham Lincoln may at first appear as a few friends jamming, their music is both accessible and full of depth.

Ottawa band Steamers recently released their debut album Years – a mix of folk-rock bluegrass and Franco music. Kilvert opted to match the band with the Milanese Gremolata Olive Oil, a thrilling flavour combination consisting of fresh lemon zest, minced garlic, Italian flat leaf parsley with a hint of mint. Wildly flavourful and complex, this oil reflects the various influences of Steamers and the excitement produced in their audience.

Zoo Legacy has become a staple of the Ottawa music scene. The indie rock and hiphop outfit recently released their EP Departures. Their music successfully merges the two genres with incredibly danceable results. The Wild Fernleaf Dill Oil, highly aromatic and savoury, was Kilvert’s final choice. This oil is both healthy and delicious and can be applied to many dishes or used as a base for sauces. Zoo Legacy’s mixture of sounds is both as classic as the Dill Oil and as sumptuous – this band will get you moving! Check out their latest video for “She’ll Never Fall in Love” below:
