We’re giving away a pair of tickets to Martini Madness! Read on to find out how to enter.
11 years ago, Martini Madness, a local fundraising soirée, was founded by a group of volunteers including Lynn Nowlan and Cheryl Whitall. Sherry Pang of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada soon joined the committee.
In their inaugural year, they raised $500. This year’s goal is $75,000. Certainly, the event has come a long way and is now a massive night of entertainment. Over its ten years of existence, the event has raised over $250,000 in support of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s research. The success of the Ottawa event has lead to its replication across Canada, with similar festive fundraisers starting in the communities of Regina, Kelowna and Halton.
This year, the Ottawa MM event takes place Thursday, November 10th, 2016 at Lago Bar Grill View. A ticket offers guests martini samplings, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, food stations, live music, art showings, plus an extensive silent and live auction. It also offers an opportunity to rub elbows (figuratively, due to height differential) with several Ottawa RedBlacks plus Ottawa Senators’ Marc Methot, the honourary event chair. There were 350 well-dressed attendees last year and organizers expect approximately 400 this year.
Beyond local celebs, art is a big component of the event. Santini Gallery puts the art in martini as an event sponsor and showcases local artwork throughout the event. Participating artists include Sara Alex Mullen, Peter Colbert, and Gabriel Forrester. Plus, David Casey live-paints a piece during the soirée.
In addition to the art and athletics, of course, are the martinis. Famed American writer, E. B. White once called this cocktail “the elixir of quietude”. Who would dare argue with the guy that wrote Charlotte’s Web? Lago’s bar manager Greg Penney creates a wide range of innovative martinis for the guests’ enjoyment. Previous concoctions included ingredients like cucumber, chai, and lychee. New cocktails are currently being carefully designed. Special offerings are also named in honour of event sponsors; so you can order the rhythmic and rhyme-friendly Kelly Santini Martini.
Get your fancy clothes out from the back of the closet. Tickets are available through the Martini Madness website.
