Join us for #Grow613 Day

By Karen Diepeveen on May 2, 2016

The region we live in is incredible for food—we can find local vegetables, eggs, fruit, honey, grains, microgreens and so much more practically in our backyards. The local farmers and growers that provide Ottawa with all of this fresh, local produce is a very long list. When you add in the food makers—those chefs and makers who create everything from barbeque sauce to jam to preserves—that list gets even longer.

If you’ve been hanging around this blog for a while, you’ve probably noticed that we’re into local food. (We are champion snackers.) So much so, that together with our partners, we’ve decided to focus Support Local on all things food this year. In the past, Support Local has typically run for a month each fall, with dozens of collaborative activities. This year, we’re spreading the Support Local love throughout the year with several food-focused events.

Our kick-off event is just two weeks away! On May 15, we’re hosting #Grow613 Day together with our friends CHUO 89.1 FM and Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. Down at Makerspace North from 11am-4pm, you’ll find a huge variety of farmers, growers, makers and more—plus some delicious food (of course!).

Ottawa City Woodshop and Ottawa Tool Library will also be running a workshop on how to build a planter out of a skid, while Sara from Top Shelf Preserves will do a demo of how she makes her tasty treats. Britannia Backyard Edibles will give a quick talk about their microgreens (so delicious), while just a few doors down Beyond the Pale will be giving away hops for you to grow—and then add to a batch of their beer! Against the Grain will also be on hand to talk all about growing Canadian grains.

There will also be a spot for the kids to decorate their own plant pot and start a few seeds.

So basically, there’s no excuse not to come—if you’re into food, curious about where it comes from, or want to learn more about growing in the city, come on out!

Grow your own beer garden

Always wondered how beer is made? And always wanted to grow your own beer—or at least, your own hops? Down at Beyond the Pale, they’ll have hops rhizomes on hand for you to take home. The BTP crew will be on hand to talk about how beer is made, what exactly the hops do, and tell you how to grow your own hops. Your hops could even make it into a batch of BTP’s delicious brews!

Runs 11am-4pm, City Centre local

Preserving 101

The art of canning is a well-preserved tradition, and Sara Pishva of Top Shelf Preserves knows it inside and out. Join Sara for a demo of how she creates her delicious canned goods, jams, chutneys and more.

1pm, Makerspace North

Tiny gardens: Microgreens and more

Britannia Backyard Edibles have taken off as a prime source of microgreens in the city—they supply many restaurants with their tiny yet flavour-packed greens. Come hear them speak about what they do, what they grow, and how you can get involved.

12pm and 2pm, Makerspace North

Terrariums: gardens in glass

Don’t have any greenspace? Want a tiny garden to green up your house? Look no further than this terrarium workshop with Blumenstudio, which will leave you an expert in tiny plants and also the proud owner of your very own glass-enclosed garden

Cost TBD, 12:30pm and 2:30pm, Makerspace North

Kids + dirt = THE MOST FUN

Kids love getting dirty. And now they can be productive about it! Our kids table will have all of the supplies for them to decorate their own little planter, and plant a few seeds for them to grow. Plus, it might be a good way to get them to start eating their vegetables…

Runs 11am-4pm, Makerspace North

#Grow613 Day takes place from 11am-4pm on May 15, 2016 at Makerspace North (#216, 250 City Centre Ave). This is a free event except for the workshops from Ottawa City Woodshop and Ottawa Tool Library and Blumenstudio. Tickets are limited and available in advance here.
