Join DIFTG at Canzine Fest this Sunday at OAG, it’s free!

By Sonya Gankina on November 3, 2022

Zine enthusiasts, rejoice! Broken Pencil Magazine is hosting its 27th annual Canzine festival in Ottawa this Sunday, November 6, at the Alma Duncan Salon in the Ottawa Art Gallery.

Broken Pencil Magazine is a mega-zine published four times a year, featuring commentary on hundreds of zines and indie arts, excerpts of the best underground press, original fiction, and interviews. Since its inception in 1995, the magazine’s Canzine Festival of Zines and Independent Print Culture has supported thousands of small press works, zines, and a multitude of writers and performers. Ottawa’s very own analog photography zine, Do It For The Grain, is participating in Canzine this year along with many more amazing vendors!

Canzine came to Ottawa for the first time in 2018, so we are thrilled to welcome the festival back to the 613 in 2022. This year’s event is 100% free, with donations welcome to support the festival. Running from 11am to 6pm, visitors are encouraged to chat with vendors, purchase zines and art, and explore our city’s unique zine culture, which varies greatly from place to place. Vendors include Ottawa and Toronto artists Ad Astra Comix + Petroglyph Studios, stunflowers, The Feminist Word (F-Word) Magazine, Kersplebedeb Publishing, and many many more, which you can discover here.

Plus, there are awesome workshops to attend! Try your hand at Letraset! Check out the dry transfer drop-in workshop with Jonathan Valelly for a throwback, hands-on, traditional way to add letters to a page. Or jump into the occult—it is Halloween week, after all—with Sex, Anarchism and the Apocalypse: A Hidden History of Zines and Chaos Magick, hosted by Gareth Sansom. Continue learning new things with Intro to Screenprinting at SAW Gallery’s Nordic Lab, which has its very own screenprinting machine. We’ve customized a tote here before and it was an amazing experience full of oozing ink.
