Peter Oundjian returns after over two decades to conduct the NAC Orchestra for their program Oundjian Conducts Dvořák. Featuring Ottawa-born cellist Bryan Cheng, the orchestra will perform works by Elgar, Dvořák, and Clyne. Edward Elgar’s gut wrenching lament Cello Concerto will be performed by Bryan Cheng. The Concerto is comprised of four movements, written in the midst of his own illness and the aftermath of World War I. Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6 is a stunning four-movement piece full of beautiful melodies that radiate the pastoral tradition. Anne Clyne’s somber and powerful Within Her Arms is a piece for fifteen strings. The content of the piece was a response to her mother’s unexpected death, emitting sounds of grief and loss.
