Is Bells Corners the new Hintonburg? Duke Fine Foods is opening soon!

By Sonya Gankina on July 9, 2021

There’s a new kid on the block! Duke Fine Foods is a brand new European gourmet grocer opening up in Bells Corners. Joining the ranks of Suzy Q donuts and Kichessipi Beer who recently migrated to the area, Bells Corners is shaping up to be a trendy spot for a day’s adventure, just like Hintonburg. With so many local businesses in one spot, we foresee BC to be the new “It” neighbourhood.

Founders Oleg and Alyona immigrated to Canada from Ukraine with a dream of owning their own coffee shop and the pandemic gave the entrepreneurs a chance to pivot to a grocery store instead. Leveraging their connections in the food trading business, they were able to secure suppliers, find an awesome spot on Robertson Road for a large bright space, and realize their dream. They’ve been hard at work since December 2020, curating a high-end experience with luxury touches and a farmhouse-chic vibe.

There are large Russian and Ukrainian diasporas in Ottawa, especially in Kanata, Barrhaven, and Stittsville, who often struggle to find traditional foods in Canadian supermarkets. Many families bring over grandparents for whom adjustment is tough. Authentic food can help create a more welcoming experience. Owners Oleg and Alyona emphasize that Duke Fine Foods will serve many European delicatessens along with Eastern European staples like caviar, smoked fish, kefir, and tvorog. You can look forward to Lithuanian bread, traditional Italian and French pastries, a selection of authentic Greek products, and imported meats and cheeses from Germany. The gourmet shop will also support Canadian dairy and retail local goods and farm-fresh milk. They will even have imports from the Balkans and Israel!

While we (im)patiently wait for the opening later this summer, let’s check out their awesome construction and interior design progress! This is the day Duke Fine Foods secured their location and the bare bones:

The proud owners say it all fit together for them like a puzzle piece:

”Why not open a grocery store?” We have experience in this business and many of our friends and family have connections to the industry. When we made this decision, we started looking for a place right away, calling up our connections and looking for investors. All the pieces fit together. “You just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other”, as the old Russian proverb says.

You can follow the exciting progress of construction and interior design set-up on their Instagram and Facebook pages. Let’s support this awesome new local business persevering through the pandemic to bring us delicious European delicatessen. Savour the fresh sauerkraut, German sausages, and Russian pelmeni in your mind for now. You can read about their food departments and specific products they will be selling on their website, where you can also sign up for an email list to be the first to hear about the opening date.
