Post by Mathieu Fleury, Rideau-Vanier Councillor, Ottawa native and lover of the great outdoors. The youngest member of city council, Coun. Fleury will be giving us the inside scoop on what’s going on at 110 Laurier Ave. West in his periodic column.

I’m excited to be writing my first blog post for Apt613! I hope that my blog posts will give you a fresh and interesting perspective on municipal politics and the happenings at city hall. As I’m representing your interests at city council, it’s important for you to know who I am and what I’m about.

I was born and raised in Sandy Hill, but my family is originally from Lowertown. Having lived in the Rideau-Vanier area my entire life, I know the major issues that affect people in this neighborhood. That said, don’t be surprised if you see me knocking on your door this spring, because I want to continue to communicate openly with residents.  By communicating with residents, I hope to find proactive and preventative solutions to your problems. My educational background in the health sciences taught me the importance of being preventive. I was once told that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and I couldn’t agree more. I think that prevention is an important idea to bring to municipal politics, because finding proactive solutions can allows us to solve problems before they even exist.

In my free time, I’m an extremely active guy. In the winter, I enjoy cross country skiing in Gatineau Park and playing hockey at the numerous outdoor rinks that this city has to offer. I try to keep a work/life balance and I have an awesome team helping me every step of the way.

I’m energized and excited by the opportunity to represent the most culturally diverse and vibrant ward in our city. That is probably why I was approached by Apt613, as something is always happening in our downtown.  The Rideau-Vanier ward is home to great restaurants, entertainment, night life, and a unique atmosphere that highlights the best of our city. I want to work toward making our downtown the place to be in Ottawa.

In my future blog posts I will tackle relevant issues that directly affect the readers of Apt613. If you have any suggestions, or things that you’d like to see in future posts, please send me an email. I look forward to writing more next month.

Until then, all the best!

Mathieu Fleury
