Everybody near and far is invited to check out the competitive dance battles and fresh artwork being painted live on the Dunbar Bridge graffiti walls. Hundreds of graffiti artists, muralists, emcees, dancers, poets, bands, and deejays will gather under the Bridge for House of PainT Festival, August 23rd to 25th. Music headliners this year are Ramriddlz, Lil Berete, and the Polaris Prize shortlisted emcee Haviah Mighty.
Friday night’s feature is the OG500 Poetry Slam happening at Queen St. Fare for the first time. Dwayne Morgan is coming in from Toronto to host and the verbal acrobat who wins this three-round slam contest will take home $500 cash. This year’s OG500 is followed by the Big Gay Hip Hop Jam afterparty with the Queer Mafia, which will feature Montreal rapper Backxwash.
Saturday’s main event is the competitive breakdance tournament featuring Ottawa’s best and international crews. If you’ve never been down to Dunbar Bridge for HoP this is an unmissable event. The sights and sounds of murals in progress, top-level dance crew battles, live music and fresh food makes this a remarkable “I can’t believe we’re in Ottawa” sort of experience.
On Sunday is the annual Knowledge Conference right after the HoP Brunch at Union Local 613 (DJ Professor Mele on the decks). The conference brings together an array of community elders and emerging artists for a day of though-provoking talks, workshops and classes.
While the festival is weeks away, the recent programming announcement sheds a light on 2019’s music lineup, afterparties, pop-up art market, showcases and workshops—with more to be announced in the lead up to HoP. See you under the bridge!
