Holiday craft show roundup 2013

By Apartment613 on November 13, 2013

The holiday season is packed full of craft shows–so many that you could hit one up every Saturday and Sunday from now until Christmas! Krista Leben, coordinator and co-founder of Urban Craft, has once again put together a curated guide of indie shows for you to hit up: the shows here feature hip handmade stuff that you (and everyone on your list) will love!

Glebe Artisan & Craft Fair
November 15, 16 & 17
Friday: 6-9pm, Saturday: 9am-3pm, Sunday: 10am-3pm
Glebe Community Centre, 175 Third Avenue

This show is a staple in the Ottawa craft scene, and it runs for 3 days at the beginning of the holiday craft show season each year. With a great mix and diversity of vendors, the show is fun to check out with friends or family you may have visiting from out of town.

Check Out: Carolina’s Box of Goodness. Carolina creates the most delectable brownies: chewy on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside and packed with rich chocolate flavor. They come individually wrapped in a gift box, perfect for gifting to the foodie on your Christmas list!

Saturday, November 16
Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, 1233 Wellington Street W

Now in its third year, Glisten is a handmade holiday event that features indie crafters and gourmet food makers. It’s the perfect place to pick up Christmas gifts for everyone on your list!

Check Out: Forestiere, whose jewelry is ephemeral and minimalistic with perfect little details adorning each piece. Her jewelry is simply divine and unlike anything we’ve seen in Ottawa before!

Sandy Hill’s One & Only
Sunday, November 17
Sandy Hill Community Centre, 250 Somerset St E

Pop on by this show to check out a wide variety of talented artists and crafters, and if you stop in before 2pm, you’ll snag a free lunch from the show’s buffet!

Spins & Needles’ Holiday Assembly
Friday, November 22
Canadian Museum of Nature, 240 McLeod St

The Canadian Museum of Nature’s now-famous Nature Nocturne is getting a crafty infusion this November with the addition of Spins & Needles! At this late night event, you’ll be immersed in a creative atmosphere which will include workshops, art installations, underground DJ sounds, and a holiday market featuring goods by independent makers, designers, artists and local businesses.

Hintonburg Christmas Craft Fair
Saturday, November 23
Hintonburg Community Centre,
1064 Wellington St W

Also a staple on the holiday craft show circuit, the Hintonburg Community Association hosts this show at their community centre each year. This show is a great place to check out emerging artisans, as many of the vendors at the show are often new to the craft scene!

Check Out: VersaTile. This Almonte company crafts designer coasters made from durable (and beautiful) tile. Pop by the Hintonburg Christmas Craft Fair and inquire about their custom Ottawa neighborhood tiles. They’ll put together a special set for you that features your neighborhood on a vintage map of the city!

The Savoir Faire
Sunday, November 24
The Aydelu Centre, 94 rue de Patrimoine, Aylmer

With the addition of The Savoir Faire, Gatineau residents finally have an indie craft show to visit on their side of the river! Now in its second year, the organizers of Savoir Faire have done a great job of putting together a wonderful group of vendors. Take a trip across the bridge to check this one out!

Idle Hands
Sunday, December 1
St Anthony’s Banquet Hall, 523 St. Anthony St

If you’re into indie crafts, you absolutely can’t miss Idle Hands this holiday season. The show is impeccably curated and will undoubtedly help you find you to some new favorite artists and makers from Ottawa and beyond!

Check Out:  In addition to indie artisans, the show also features a selection of vintage goods including toys, books and clothes!

Saturday, December 7
Knox Church, 227 Elgin St.

Craftalicious gets a new home on Elgin Street this year. This fantastic show features a wide variety and range of vendors, including several who don’t exhibit anywhere else during the holiday season. It’s a must visit!

Check Out: Top Shelf Preserves. With goodies like Preserved Lemons and Pickled Green Tomatoes, these ain’t your grandmas jams! Snag a jar of something unique for the food lover on your list.

Chinatown Craft Walk
Sunday, December 8
Raw Sugar Café, Shanghai Restaurant & The Daily Grind, Chinatown

For the past few years, several businesses in our beloved Chinatown have teamed up to put on a craft walk each holiday season. Pop by Raw Sugar Café, Shanghai Restaurant & The Daily Grind on December 8 to check out different vendors at each venue. I always love tucking into each show—each different in its own way—as a way to get out of the cold weather and to check out new vendors!

Urban Craft
Saturday, December 14
Glebe Community Centre, 175 Third Avenue

Rounding off the holiday craft show season is Urban Craft, Ottawa’s Craft Bash. The event features 45+ hip, modern, handmade vendors. Nosh at Auntie Loo’s Vegan Pop Up Diner, snag some last minute gifts for everyone on your list, and listen to some modern holiday beats!

Check Out: Mossfeathers. If you have someone on your holiday that has a big green thumb, Mossfeathers’ terrariums will make them swoon. Owner Amanda crafts the most dramatic and gorgeous works of moss which will be available at Urban Craft on December 14!
