A few weeks back, on a Saturday night late in March, I decided to stop by the Arts Court and check out the latest edition of Art Battle. For those that have never been, Art Battle is a live painting competition held each month at the Arts Court. Ten participants face off in two initial 20-minute rounds. At the end of each round, the painters are asked to drop their brushes. That’s when everyone gets one final chance to survey the works and cast their ballot for their favourite painting. The best two from each round advance to the finals. The four finalists then square off in the final round, with the winner being crowned as Art Battle champ.
This was my second time at Art Battle, and the turnout was great. Things really kick off when the first round starts, and the painters get into their work in the middle of the room. The crowd starts circling around keeping an eye on their progress. The atmosphere is great, there’s music in the background, and even a small bar in the corner. It does get a bit cramped at times, but luckily there’s a theater right next door where you can always find a seat and relax. This is also where the paintings from previous rounds are displayed in case you want a closer look. At the end of the night, all the paintings are auctioned off via silent auction. So if you are looking to pick up something fresh for your house or apartment this could be the place to go.
Most important of all, it’s a good way of supporting the local art community, and it’s a great way for up-and-coming artists to showcase their work locally.
If you’re looking for something new to do in Ottawa, check out the next Art Battle on Monday, May 5th at the Arts Court. Visit their Facebook event page. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 online or $15 at the door.
