Olenka Bastian and Jonathan Chandler are the Ottawa folk duo Silent Winters, but are often seen onstage as vocalists for Amos The Transparent. Upon releasing their debut Silent Winters album in 2017, the pair earned not one but two nominations for Canadian Folk Awards. They’ve been building upon their momentum and have gone back into the studio to record their second album, The Duke Hotel. They’re grateful for the generous grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, as it’s allowed them the freedom to work with wonderful talent during the recording, such as Kinley Dowling (Hey Rosetta!), Peter Von Althen (Kathleen Edwards Band), Jim Bryson and Daniel Hay (Amos the Transparent).
Their latest album delves into their Ottawa roots, drawing their inspiration from the history of LeBreton Flats, and their family ancestry. The album is available Friday February 22, 2019.
You can catch Silent Winters performing the The Duke Hotel on Tuesday February 26, 2019, at The Gladstone Theatre, with special guests Phil Jenkins, NAC Orchestra musicians and Peter Von Athlen.
