On Friday, March 22nd, local music news website and concert promoters Ottawa Showbox are hosting a fundraising concert to support their operations and to continued support for the music community here in Ottawa. The show will highlight some of Ottawa’s best and brightest musicians, but first here’s a little background.

The concert is the culmination of a month-long campaign called the Showbox SoundDrive. Ottawa Showbox is a not-for-profit organization that works on the ground-level to highlight local music in different ways. Founded in 2012, Showbox began as a music blog that filled a void after The XPress went under in May of that year.

The website grew over the next few years, becoming one of the pillars of the music community by helping to disseminate new music, conducting artist interviews, offering live music picks, providing resources like a music venue map, and year-end lists.

Another way Showbox has highlighted Ottawa music in the past few years has been through concert promotion. The company has acted as a promoter for multiple local album releases, acting as a springboard for bands to get their music out into the world. Showbox has also presented the Showbox Concert Series since 2017, a special night of music that takes place in unique church spaces and typically involves pop-up shops.

With limited revenue sources as a not-for-profit, the Showbox SoundDrive is an effort to reach out to the music scene for donations in order to keep the company sustainable and alive for years to come. The goal is to pay writers and photographers, cover website hosting and maintenance fees, and keep out of the red each year. With the help of the community, Showbox is able to provide its services on an ongoing basis.

The SoundDrive concert on Friday includes local acts Mushy Gushy, Sparklesaurus, and Expanda Fuzz—all of whom have worked with Showbox in the past.

Plenty of prizes will be raffled off throughout the night, all provided by community sponsors around town. At the end of the show, Showbox is giving away a record player as the grand prize, care of The Record Centre. All donations of $20 or over will be automatically entered to win the turntable setup, and all attendees are automatically entered.

Donations can be made to the SoundDrive campaign here.

Mushy Gushy, Sparklesaurus, and Expanda Fuzz are playing the Showbox SoundDrive at 8pm on Friday March 22 at The Commons in Mediastyle (131 Bank St, 3rd floor) which is a beautiful space located in an historic building. Tickets are $10 online, or $12 at the door. Head to Facebook for more details.
