Gig Pick: Ron Sexsmith at the National Arts Centre – 04.29.17

By Greggory Clark on April 26, 2017

Three-time JUNO Award winner Ron Sexsmith’s status as one of the greatest Canadian songwriters of his generation has never been in doubt since the release of his eponymous major label debut album in 1995. His newest album The Last Rider was released by Warner Music on April 21 and is his 13th full-length studio album to date.

The Last Rider also stands out as Sexsmith’s first studio record to include his touring band. “Having my band totally involved on this album maybe brought out more in the songs than on recent albums. It felt special,” said Sexsmith in an interview with Exclaim!.

The album and tour band includes Don Kerr on drums (Rheostatics, The Hidden Cameras, Bahamas), NYC-based Canadian expat Jason Mercer (Ani Difranco, Jason Collett, Feist, Norah Jones) on double bass, and guitarist Kevin Lacroix (Dave Bidini, Selina Martin).

JUNO nominated singer Lori Cullen will open the night. In 2016, True North Records released Cullen’s 7th album, which features songs composed specially for her by Kurt Swinghammer and Ron Sexsmith.

Ron Sexsmith performs at the NAC Theatre (1 Elgin St) on Saturday April 29 at 7:30pm. Tickets start at $29 and are available online, by phone, or at the NAC Box Office.
