Ottawa Jazz Orchestra in concert at the National Arts Centre

Gig Pick: Ottawa Jazz Orchestra at the NAC 4th Stage—02.23.19

By Barbara Popel and Greggory Clark on February 19, 2019

The Ottawa Jazz Orchestra led by Adrian Cho.

Every Ottawa Jazz Orchestra concert we’ve attended has been a delight—and every one of them has been different. This next show, entitled Hidden Gems, will be performed by a quintet of OJO musicians under the direction of bassist Adrian Cho. All five members of the quintet solo throughout this program.

With this setlist, the ensemble is exploring American composer Reed Kotler through arrangements by his compatriot, trumpeter Bobby Shew. It’s gonna swing! While Kotler’s compositions are contemporary for his time, his music is firmly rooted in the realm of straight-ahead jazz. He’s an underrated composer whose swinging songs are right up there with the best jazz standards.

The venue is the wonderful remodelled National Arts Centre Fourth Stage, so the sound should be exquisite.

The Ottawa Jazz Orchestra ‘Hidden Gems’ concert is taking place at the National Arts Centre on February 23, 2019 at 8:30pm. Tickets cost $37.50 online. Visit for more information.
