It’s been almost a year since Blackalicious performed inside a packed Zaphods on a cold winter night. The dynamic duo that make up Blackalicious, Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel, will be returning this Saturday January 13 to The 27 Club to put on a masterclass of lyricism and linguistic prowess.

Starting in Sacramento in the early 90s, Blackalicious has received critical acclaim for albums such as The Craft and Imani Vol. 1. Remaining true to their 90s origins, Gift of Gab focuses on flow and delivery of his lyrics, while Chief Xcel provides the boom bap beats and a diverse array of sampled instruments. Throughout their career, the duo have collaborated with other big names in the music industry, such as Questlove of The Roots and Zach De La Rocha of Rage Against The Machine.

The group took a fairly large break after the release and touring of 2005’s The Craft, releasing solo and group projects on the side. And so it’s almost impossible to not mention the exposure to a new era of fans after the group’s song, Alphabet Aerobics, was featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, rapped by none other than Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe. The current video on YouTube currently sits at over 80 million views, and provided a stepping stone to the catalogue of Blackalicious.

Blackalicious is performing with special guests Poetic Elements at The 27 Club (27 York St) on Saturday January 13, 2018. Tickets cost $22.50 online and are also available at Vertigo Records, Compact Music, and NRML. Look out for gig photos on APT613 after the show.
