Are you ready for Ottawa’s first inter-agency Battle of the Bands?
Benefiting Girls+ Rock Ottawa, the night will feature bands from Syncopate Media, Salt., Alphabet Creative, and McMillan. Kicking things off will be Ottawa Rock Camp for Girls+ alumni band Salmon Ella.
Reached by email, organizer Chris Campeau of McMillan had this to say: “At its core, this event is a chance to foster a greater sense of community within our local creative industry. We often just work in our silos, strapped for time and oblivious to one another’s work. Events like these are great opportunities to shoot the breeze, have a few laughs, and reconnect.”
Girls+ Rock Ottawa is a volunteer-run community organization that provides music-based programming to foster empowerment, inclusivity and community to girls, women, femmes, non-binary, two-spirit, and gender non-conforming folk (GWFNB2SGNC+)—all while having fun. Their flagship event is a three-day camp, during which participants learn an instrument, join a band, and showcase their achievements at a live performance. “Support from the community through events such as this helps us create safer and more inclusive spaces,” says Girls+ Rock Ottawa chair Tiffanie Tri in an email interview.
After learning about Girls+ Rock Ottawa and the work they’re doing in the community, organizers “thought it’d be great to extend the experience beyond a simple donation, and involve Girls+ Rock Ottawa even further,” says Chris. “So now, Salmon Ella, one of the graduate bands of the organization’s Rock Camp for Girls+, is going to play a set.”
We believe that developing and supporting artists is key to increasing representation in the music scene, and opportunities like this are part of the process.—Tiffanie Tri, Girls+ Rock Ottawa
“It’s great that the agencies have expressed interest in having a Girls+ Rock Ottawa alumni band perform at the event. We believe that developing and supporting artists is key to increasing representation in the music scene, and opportunities like this are part of the process,” says Tiffanie. Alumni band Salmon Ella, composed of Cynthia (bassits), Katie (lead singer and guitar), Dani (lead guitar) and Hannah (drummer), have been practicing regularly since the beginning of 2018. Reached via email, Salmon Ella drummer Hannah Vlaar says “we’re so lucky to have the support of Girls+ Rock… The agency rock off is our second gig to date. We love making quirky songs and jamming together!”
The 613 Agency Rock-Off takes place Thursday November 22 at Rainbow Bistro (76 Murray Street). Note there is a flight of stairs to access the venue. Tickets are available online for $10. Proceeds will go to Girls+ Rock Ottawa. Doors open at 7pm, opening remarks start at 7:30pm.
