Ottawa Jazzfest kicked things off this weekend in style, with Montreal’s Busty and the Bass putting on two shows between Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The grooves were heavy and the horn section was on top of their game.

The band was formed at McGill University in Montreal in 2011 before winning the recognition of Top University Band by CBC in 2014.

Performing songs from albums such as Uncommon Good and the LIFT EP, the crowd was able to hear a variety of the band’s sounds. The Canadian electro-soul group had everyone up on their feet and dancing from the first song. This year, the late-night stage takes place outside the front of City Hall, and from the experience of night one, it definitely is the place to be each night after the headliners finish their sets.

The late-night concert series at Jazzfest is always a highlight, as it usually features more upbeat, experimental groups that are on the rise, and this year is no different. If you’re still on the fence, be sure to make your way down this week for the likes of Lido Pimienta, Louis Cole Big Band, and Cha Wa.

Ottawa Jazzfest runs until July 3. See their website for lineup and tickets.
