The Mercury Lounge – aka The Merc – knows what’s up. Drawing from both local and international acts, its music programming has been top notch for years. Brazilian-born Claudia Balladelli – the Mercury Lounge’s Music Programmer/Promoter for the past 14 years – is a big reason why.
Her long experience has given Balladelli great insight into the ever-changing music industry. John Criswick, owner of the Merc, approached Balladelli last year to ask her if she would take the lead to create a music conference in Ottawa. Building off of the success of the Megaphono music conference and the Connecting Ottawa Music Report, Balladelli and her team – Marilena Gaudio, Olexandra Pruchnicky and Caroline Guespin – are organizing the Ottawa International Music Conference (OIMC) from May 29th to 31st.
According to Balladelli, OIMC will be a building block for all parts of the city’s music scene.
“I always thought that live music and electronic can be together, as one feeds the other and vice versa. I wanted to create an event that not only celebrates Ottawa’s music scene, but something that can raise Ottawa to a higher level and give more reasons for people to come here.”
OIMC will span 3 nights of performances and 2 days of convention functions at Maker Space North, inside the City Centre Building. Besides a number groundbreaking acts in multiple genres of music, OIMC will help artists to share their knowledge of the industry and build musical networks through workshops, panels and of course parties!
Some of the acts that will be showcased at OIMC include Nomadic Massive, Tortured Soul, France’s Rone, and the Souljazz Orchestra. Workshops and seminars will cover topics like “the evolution of parties”, “hip hop as a tool for social change” and “the future of music – getting the most out of digital distribution”.
Early bird passes cost $85 plus fees. Apt613, in collaboration with OIMC, is giving away one free pass to a lucky reader! Just let us know in the comments section what OIMC event you are most excited to check out and we will select a winner randomly by end of day May 18, 2015.
