From dance to music to comedy, Shenkman Arts Centre’s 2021–2022 season brings us a little bit of everything

By Shireen Agharazi-Dormani on December 21, 2021

With COVID-19 having invaded our lives over a year ago, it’s almost strange to think about how quickly this year has gone by. (I thought time flew when one had fun? Hello?)

That said, if you’re hoping to end this year and begin the next one with some entertainment, then hear me out.

The Shenkman Arts Centre presents its 2021/2022 season, with a variety of dance, comedy, and music for you to enjoy. From The Washboard Union‘s country music in late January to reggae group The Original Wailers in early February, the centre offers plenty of options through early April.

“We are so excited to be able to put a season together again and what a season we have to offer our audiences!” Jahn Fawcett, Portfolio Manager at the Shenkman Arts Centre, said in a media release. “I believe there is something for everyone to enjoy and we are here waiting to welcome our community back.”

Normally, the centre would announce their entire season’s shows earlier in the year. Due to the pandemic, however, they had to delay this announcement. They regularly update their COVID-19 regulations, continuing to follow all provincial and local public health rules. Also, they email ticket holders with the latest information the week of the show. Most shows will take place in the 500-seat Harold Shenkman Hall.

That said, with the recent news regarding the pandemic, there are capacity limits in place and proof of vaccination is required. Check out their website for more details, and remember to take care of yourselves!

All tickets have been on sale to the public since Nov. 25. Ticket prices range from free to a little under $70, depending on age and the performance, so make sure to save your spot!

“COVID-19 has been difficult in so many ways,” said Fawcett via email. “Now, we are welcoming people back to a safe and inviting place to connect with friends, laugh, and escape into other worlds. Just in the last few weeks, we have seen audiences slowly return to the theatre. They have been some of our best audiences ever!”

The art centre’s upcoming performance is a comedy night that takes place on New Year’s Eve at 9pm. We’ve got three Canadian comedians to make you laugh for the night: Andrew Chapman, who’s hosted multiple television programs and been in some TV shows as well; award-winning stand-up comedian Chris Locke, whose face has been spotted on Just For Laughs comedy festivals; and Jackie Pirico, who you may have seen on Just For Laughs and is a member of the comedy collective Laugh Sabbath. Tickets cost $60.
