The Sink
by Nick Wade
The Alley Brats

30 min / Storytelling / PG

Wake up. Go to work in the factory. Inspect metal-work components, one after another after another, until shift end. Go home. Repeat. And the sink. The ever-dripping sink.

In this short, 30-minute play you are first welcomed into the theatre with Orson Welles-ian crypto sounds and an illuminated box in the middle of a stage. You’re swept quickly into the character’s mundane life of working for “The Machine” day in and day out, until he discovers a defective piece that changes his life.

This is a one-person play written and performed by Nick Wade – who is actually a tool master dealing with sinks – that first debuted at the Ottawa Fringe in 2015. That run was in a small BYOV and you can see that it has been crafted brilliantly for the larger Arts Court Theatre venue this time. I wish I could have compared the previous incarnation to this one – however I can only assume The Sink became more refined as Nick Wade was in Erik Karlsson 2017 playoff form for this one… top notch.

Every word was clear and this play used very vivid descriptions of the settings of the factory and surroundings so you could feel you were right there living this person’s life. The crowd was hanging onto every word from the performer’s mouth as he meticulously crafted a stand-out performance, using the stage rather well. The sound and lighting were on point.

Even though it is only 30 minutes, every second is used wisely and The Sink is very quick-paced. You will leave with a smile on your face just like the rest of the crowd did tonight. I highly recommend.

The Sink by Nick Wade is playing at Arts Court Theatre (2 Daly Ave) until Sunday June 18, 2017. Tickets cost $12 online and in advance. Visit ottawafringe.com for the show schedule and box office info.
