Daters Gonna Date

Good Morning Apocalypse

50 min / Sketch Comedy / PG

A wizard, a catfish and a mime walk into a bar–Daters Gonna Date explores every nightmarish dating scenario you never knew was possible. The sketch comedy revue by Good Morning Apocalypse is 50 minutes of nonstop energy, and the performers are clearly having fun onstage. But I feel like I’ve seen this show before.

Aside from the lighting and sound effects, (which were, on a positive note, seamlessly executed throughout) the series of vignettes felt closer to an improv game than a scripted performance. The storylines were predictable and the characters were, for the most part, underdeveloped caricatures of men and women in the dating scene.

Some of the more clever bits showed promise and I wish had been taken further—a couple arguing over salad at a restaurant leads into a dramatic soliloquy from the POV of the lettuce—but these moments were lost in what was otherwise a very safe script.

Props to the cast for their boundless energy and team spirit, but I’d swipe left on this one.

Daters Gonna Date is playing at Arts Court Theatre (2 Daly Ave) until Sunday June 24, 2018. Tickets cost $12. Visit for the schedule and box office info. Read more reviews at
