Dianne became a woman at 40 years old. Before then, she always had to compartmentalize things in her life: children, marriage, work, as well as the tiny voice of her true self, begging to exist, more and more throughout the years. Today, this tiny voice takes up space on a stage.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Becoming a Woman is about breaking barriers; it’s about love; it’s about an ex-future wife, it’s about “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”—but mostly, it’s about unapologetically being your true self. So much that even the lighting on the stage decided to be off-timing a few times. That’s just how contagious Dianne’s energy is.

There is an elephant in the room the moment you enter the theatre. Literally. A stuffed elephant is hanging out next to a bunch of file boxes on the stage. These boxes might refer to the compartmentalised life Dianne has had to confront, but it also reveals the bureaucratic and oftentimes inhumane steps of gender transition.

In essence, Dianne spills the tea with no filters about who she is and who she was. The quirky comedian presents herself with such authenticity that it makes it impossible to stop listening to her from beginning to end.

Her infinitely resilient performance in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Becoming a Woman guarantees smiles and laughter. A must for this 25th edition of the Fringe festival.
