Foodie Friday: The Original Burger Joint is under new management

By John Olsthoorn on June 13, 2014

When you see “Under New Management” sometimes you have no idea how long the place has actually been under the new management. What does it really mean? My companion had eaten at the Original Burger Joint on Bank Street near Fifth Avenue in the Glebe under old management and swore she would never go back. I suggested we give it a try anyway so we rummaged through her black bin looking for the coupon offering Glebe residents a free cheesecake with any hamburger combo order.

The restaurant was almost empty on this Wednesday noon hour. The Fury FC fans, Stony Monday Riot weren’t there mostly because the football club hasn’t started playing at the nearby Lansdowne Park. We could sit anywhere, the server suggested, and we did.

Service was wonderfully friendly. Attentive without being overbearing, and the server got my jokes, a big plus in my books. We couldn’t find the combos on the menu as mentioned in the coupon but the server said that any of the Signature Burgers or the Our Famous Stuffed Burgers qualified for the bonus dessert.

The menu descriptions were a bit Plain Jane, not like those in the menu from a popular local hamburger restaurant chain. We learned you don’t need fancy and funny names to get a great burger. We ordered a Breakfast “Signature” hamburger and a Mushroom Madness “Stuffed” hamburger, both with sides of fries with the intent to swap half with each other.

The fries were nicely crisp – a good balance of crisp and tenderness. On whole wheat buns – they sold out of the half wheat (my joke) ones – the burgers looked messy to eat but we didn’t have to go through wads of napkins. They were tasty. The Breakfast burger’s highlights were the bacon, cheddar cheese and a fried egg just a touch runny, perfectly cooked. The stuffed burger, with sautéed mushrooms and brie had a nice mix of flavors. We each loved our own meal we only shared a quarter of our burger with each other giving us the excuse to come back.

The cheesecake was creamy and we had a choice of chocolate, raspberry or caramel sauce. The latter two were our choices and good ones. Our server kept our water glasses topped up when they needed a refill.

Here at the Original Burger Joint, under new management means going from to die of to to die for. It’s that good, that simple.

Our burger combos were $14 each and included fries (or a “Jim” salad), the cheesecake (with the coupon) and water. Taxes and tip were extra.

The Original Burger Joint is located at 873 Bank Street. They are open Sunday to Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For inquiries, please call 613-421-5802.
