Would you believe me if I said all your ice cream dreams have come true? Ottawa’s favourite ice cream truck is now dishing out its mouthwatering frozen custard from the cutest little shop in Hintonburg. Although the truck will still be out and about hitting up every soccer game and office parking lot, we can now have Merry Dairy ice cream every day of the week without having to fret about chasing down the truck.
Marlene Haley is the brains behind the refurbished van turned food truck and its more recent brick-and-mortar location at 102 Fairmont Avenue. She has been been serving up frozen custard since 2012 and it’s truly like no other! Her tasty treats were becoming so popular that Marlene needed a bigger space for production. When the building that was formerly Fairmont Confectionery and Sam’s Café freed up, she couldn’t resist the idea of having a storefront space in addition to the production area. The patio outside, lined with brightly painted picnic tables and umbrellas, invites people from nearby Fairmont Park and Wellington Street to enjoy a post-dinner cone with friends and family.
The Merry Dairy carefully crafts their frozen custard with three different types of machinery, offering three very unique products – Midwestern-style frozen custard, Jersey-style frozen custard, and hard scoop ice cream. Despite differing techniques, all treats have one thing in common: premium ingredients! Made with egg yolks and 12%-14% butterfat, and combined with a method that ensures less air bubbles, the Merry Dairy’s frozen custard is thicker, creamier, and smoother than regular ice cream. To tempt you even more, they make their waffle cones in house daily!
Can’t wait to try it out? Here’s the scoop on what they are offering:
- Midwestern frozen custard
- Soft serve frozen custard
- Hard scoop ice cream
- Ice cream sandwiches
- Carry home tubs
The Merry Dairy is open from noon-9pm Sunday to Thursday, and noon-10pm Friday and Saturday. You can find them on Instagram @themerrydairy.
