If you’ve spent any time sipping a warm beverage in a coffee shop you may have set your eyes on a few bright green drinks floating around. I’m here to introduce you to the wonders of Matcha! Originating in Japan, matcha comes from ground green tea leaves, meaning you get all the nutrients that usually get thrown away when you take your green tea bag out of your hot water. For this reason matcha lattes are absolutely loaded with antioxidants, which are great for anything from preventing cancer, to boosting your metabolism. Sold yet? Here are some of Ottawa’s favourite places to get matcha lattes…

Ministry of Coffee (279 Elgin Street & 1013 Wellington Street West)

Coffee shop by day, great place for a drink with friends by night, the Ministry of Coffee ensures the best quality and freshness in all of its beverages. The matcha latte is no exception!

Uji Cafe (215 Rideau Street)

Perhaps Ottawa’s ultimate matcha destination, Uji Cafe is the capital’s first ever Japanese cafe. They use only the finest imported matcha and the menu is absolutely filled with green tea treats. Also, their on point latte art makes it terribly hard to resist taking a photo.

Little Jo Berry’s (1305 Wellington Street West)

Get your matcha latte at this vegan gem with dairy free milk alternatives. Enjoy it with a vegan pop tart with no guilt because no animals were harmed in the making of these sweet treats!

Bridgehead (multiple locations)

This season Bridgehead added both matcha vanilla lattes and matcha flat whites to their menu. Screams of joy were heard all over Ottawa because this basically means you are always two blocks away from the tastiest cup of green goodness!

Café qui pense (204 Main Street)

My personal favourite, Café qui pense makes the creamiest matcha lattes! Sip your warm bevvie there or take it to go as you browse the Singing Pebble Books store next door. Books and matcha = a recipe for the perfect afternoon!

Red Door Provisions (117 Beechwood Avenue)

If you’re lucky you might pop into Red Door Provisions on a day when they have matcha glazed doughnuts. If not, don’t worry as their matcha lattes are amazing and they have the best grilled cheeses in the city!

Feline Café (1076 Wellington Street West)

If you haven’t been to Feline Café for some quality cat time, now you have an even better excuse… they have great matcha lattes!

Quelque Chose Pâtisserie (379 Richmond Road & 274 Montreal Road)

Feeling fine and fancy? Quelque Chose Pâtisserie is the perfect cafe for a classy afternoon with the ladies. It will be hard to choose whether you want the matcha latte, matcha macaron, or matcha milkshake… tough decisions!

Origin Trade (111 York Street)

Located right in the market, Origin is the perfect spot to stop in for a quick matcha latte, or to settle in and do some studying. Their matcha is made with authentic ceremonial matcha… the good stuff!

Black Squirrel Books (1073 Bank Street)

Drink your matcha latte while listening to some live music at Black Squirrel Books, or peruse through their impressive collection of used books.

Whole Foods (951 Bank Street)

You might not have noticed as you make a beeline for the aisles and aisles of heath food and goods, but Whole Foods has a cute cafe serving up quality drinks on the first floor. Their matcha lattes are great fuel for grocery shopping.

Bread By Us (1065 Wellington Street West)

This bakery is filled with flaky, buttery goodness including all the croissants, bread, and cinnamon buns you could dream of. Grab a matcha latte and some sort of loaf and head outside to do some window shopping in Hintonburg.

Art-Is-In Bakery (250 City Centre Avenue)

Matcha lattes here are topped with beautiful latte art! Enjoy your cup of green inside Art-Is-In’s dreamy warehouse space or weather permitting, take it outside to soak in the sunshine on their patio.

These places were recommendations from our lovely reader friends, but we would love to hear more in the comments below.
