Since its opening in the summer of 2016, Andaz Ottawa’s Copper Spirits & Sights rooftop lounge has become one of the city’s best spots to grab a drink and enjoy the view of the ByWard Market and beyond. Fortunately for brunch fans, on the last Sunday of every month this rooftop lounge transforms into a brunch lover’s dream. Rooftop Beats + Brunch features chef Stephen La Salle’s unique take on bite size brunch favourites. I was fortunate to be able to enjoy October’s edition.
Andaz is continuously updating their menus and with that, the brunch selection changes monthly as well. When I attended in October, just a few days before Halloween, the theme was spooky treats. In honour of the upcoming Grey Cup, the November edition will be a fancy tailgate party – come dressed to impress or in your best Grey Cup gear. A DJ is on site playing music loud enough to set the vibe but not so loud that you can’t enjoy conversation with your tablemates. Every seat in the lounge has a great view. Whether it’s of the impressive Copper Spirits & Sights bar or looking out across the market towards Parliament this is a great spot to start your day.
Rather than adhering to standard brunch items ordered from a menu, Beats + Brunch offers up a mix of passed canapes and a self-serve food station. Your waiter will take your drink order and if you’re a fan of Caesars, the National Capital Caesar is a must-try. Drink in hand, you’re free to try cheese, charcuterie, fresh fruit and berries, smoked fish, pastries, scones, muffins, parfaits, smoothies and more! My favourites were the passed canapes: the avocado toast and smoked salmon mini bagels got top marks at my table. The baked eggs and bacon cups were delicious and like everything else, were the perfect bite sized serving. The mini burgers were another hit and we gladly indulged in a few.
If you’re looking for a change from your usual brunch spot and want to take in great views of the city, Beats + Brunch is a great option. After the November edition, they’ll be taking a break to celebrate the holidays so keep an eye out for the January edition. Although the patio wasn’t open for seating when we visited due to it being a rainy October day, you can still pop outside to take in the view and some fresh air.
Tickets are available online for $40, plus tax and fees, and include your meal. Drinks are extra. Seatings are at 11am, 12:30pm and 2pm. The lounge is located on the 16th floor of Andaz Ottawa (325 Dalhousie Street). The next brunch will be November 26. For more information , visit their Facebook event page.
