I remember the first time one of my friends wore camouflage pants back in grade school. It was THE coolest thing – the rest of us tried not to gawk, but we were all secretly jealous that our moms hadn’t bought those pants for us. It was my first experience of cutting edge fashion (besides, of course, Danielle V’s neon pink stirrup leggings in grade two).

Camouflage has made its way from practical army use to the front lines of fashion. But why has this particular print, created to hide, disguise and conceal, become so popular?

The War Museum has pulled together its latest exhibit just to find out. From now until the end of the year, the Museum will feature the early forms of camouflage to the latest, digitally-produced images. Tracing camouflage throughout the last century, as well as other concealment and distraction techniques various armies have employed, this exhibit looks promising.

And who knows – maybe I’ll finally be able to purchase a pair of my own camouflage pants at the gift shop. Take that, cool kids!
