Foodie Friday: celebrate fall harvest in the ByWard Market

By Hannah Manning on October 13, 2017

The ByWard Market is celebrating fall with a number of activities, including the second annual Sausage Fest. Billed as the wurst festival Ottawa has ever seen, you can really sink your teeth into it at the Sausage Party taking place on October 14. Some of your favourite local restaurants and food retailers will be serving a variety of sausage samplers starting at $1 each!

The ByWard Market is home to fruit and vegetable vendors and artisans and as part of the revitalization plan, they recently opened two permanent stalls. You can find handmade goods by local makers on sale in one of the two new stalls. The other stands is run by Merchants Maple Country Sugar Bush, for anyone looking for their maple syrup fix.

While you’re in the market, don’t miss the two giant pumpkins that have found homes in the market. One can be found on the newly redesigned George Street Plaza, and an even larger one on York Street near Dalhousie!

While you’re getting in the Halloween spirit, why not celebrate Friday the 13th with Hocus Pocus, another Capital Pop-Up Cinema Production. Want to debut your Halloween costume early? Feel free as they are hosting a costume contest (with a special Sausage Fest category of: Best Sausagefest Themed Costume).

And if you haven’t yet taken advantage of the National Capital Commission’s free shuttle to Gatineau Park, wander down to the corner of Sussex and York to hop on the bus Saturday and Sunday. We hear the leaves are looking mighty fine!

For more on the ByWard Market, visit their website. Hocus Pocus will be shown Friday October 13 at 6:30pm. The Sausage Party runs October 14 from 10am-4pm. The NCC’s free shuttle runs all this weekend and next between 9am-2pm.
